THE STATE OF WEIJA-GBAWE
CONSTITUENCY IN TWO (2) YEARS UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF HON. TINA GIFTY NAA AYELEY MENSAH
This Research piece presents undiluted findings of facts of a research exercise carried out in Weija-Gbawe Constituency by Teacher Danquah Research Institute (TDRI) to assess the performance and work done by Hon. Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah in two (2) period as Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe Constituency.
On the fateful day of January 7, 2017, Hon. Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah, among other colleagues was sworn into office by the speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Speaker, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye as a member of the 7th Parliament to represent Weija-Gbawe Constituency.
DEMARCATION OF WEIJA CONSTITUENCY:
Weija Constituency now defunct was demarcated into three (3) in 2012 by the Electoral Commission of Ghana under the leadership of Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan. This constitutional process gave birth to Weija-Gbawe Constituency.
2015 PARLIAMENTARY PRIMARY:
Prior to the 2016 elections, Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah emerged as winner of a keenly contested primary organized by the Weija-Gbawe Constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to represent the party as its parliamentary candidate for the 2016 elections.
The Constituency under the leadership of Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah witnessed an action packed electioneering campaign process
which culminated into the massive electoral victory of the party in the constituency for the first time. The performance of the party in the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary elections is historic.
Her splendid performance in the last elections caught the admiration of all, particularly His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to appoint her as Deputy Minister for the Health Ministry; a portfolio, she has distinguished herself worthy for. Her accolade so far attest to all.
The constituency is largely dominated by members and sympathizers of the New Patriotic Party with over ninety (90) thousand electorates out of a total of over 110,000 inhabitants populating the space.
2016 GENERAL ELECTIONS:
To state facts, 36,803
representing 61.64% and 22, 398 representing 37.51% votes were obtained by the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress respectively in the 2016 Presidential election held in Weija-Gbawe Constituency.
34,216 representing 57.29% and 25,087 representing 42.00% of votes were secured by Hon. Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah and Obuobia Darko-Opoku, on the ticket of the NPP and NDC respectively.
Two years down memory lane, it still stands tall that the electoral performance of the New Patriotic Party in Weija-Gbawe Constituency cannot be overemphasized without making reference to the selfless and committed service of the men and women who fought gallantly to secure the landslide victory for the Party in the constituency under review.
The Member of Parliament, Hon. Tina Gift Naa Ayeley Mensah within the last two (2) years has chalked some remarkable successes in Weija-Gbawe Constituency in spite of the numerous challenges bedeviling the constituency. Notable among these challenges is the perennial flooding in more than 70% of communities in the constituency. Unemployment among the youth continues to be a major issue to battle with.
In the wake of the major challenges aforementioned, the Honorable
Member, Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah has performed creditably in the area of employment creation, education, health, social interventions, security, sanitation, among a host of other unspecified areas.
ACHIEVEMENTS OF WEIJA-GBAWE MP IN JUST TWO YEARS
Before the MP was voted into power in 2016, the event preceding it was characterized by promises made to the good people of Weija-Gbawe constituency. Two years down the lane, she has been able to supply ten (10) ultra-modern state of the art equipment in the form of hospital beds with accessories to health facilities in Weija-Gbawe Constituency.
The hospital beds were supplied to Ga South Municipal Hospital now Weija-Gbawe Municipal Hospital, Oblogo Health Centre, SDA Clinic; a private clinic operated under CHAG and Mallam Public Health Nurses Demonstration Clinic. The Member of Parliament occasionally pays unannounced visits to both public and private health facilities in the constituency to access their state of performance, most especially service delivery to constituents who visit the said health facilities for healthcare.
To make healthcare delivery accessible to the very people living in Weija-Gbawe Constituency, the Honourable Member has initiated a process for the construction of two (2) public clinics; one in Tetegu and the other in Wiaboman.
On the 17th December, 2018, Hon. Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah led a sod cutting ceremony for the commencement of the construction of the clinics in Tetegu and Wiaboman communities.
Education continues to the be the heat of Ghana, hence to ensure that the young generation are given the very best of education, Hon. Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah donated one hundred and ninety-five (195) dual desks to salvage a situation at Oblogo M/A 2&3 Basic Schools in 2017. The condition under which the children learn was very much appalling. Most of these children in the lower and upper primary sat on bare floor or broken desks instructional periods. This condition attracted the MP’s attention to supply the desks as an intervention to end the regime were school children sit on bare floor during teaching and learning periods.
The 195 dual desks supplied to the schools is part of some 400 dual and mono desks the MP intends to supply to other schools in the constituency to eliminate the situation where three to four pupils sit on a dual desk meant for two pupils per the design. The 400 dual and mono desks are part of a request put before the MP by the Education Directorate to salvage the no desk syndrome in almost all schools in the Constituency.
From 2017 to 2018, the MP has supplied over 5,000 mathematical sets to final year students in the constituency as part of her bid to see education thrive. At the beginning of the 2016/2017 academic year, Hon. Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah supplied 2,500 branded exercise books to KG 1;and primary 1 and 2 pupils as part of my first day at school celebration in the constituency.
For the 2018/19 academic year which commenced September of last year, the MP who doubles as Deputy Health Minister liaised with the MCE for Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly, Hon Patrick K.B. Kumor to donate stationery items to pupils in all KG schools in the Constituency.
In the area of higher education, through the efforts of the MP, five (5) persons have received scholarships to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate degrees of higher learning.
In 2018, Hon. Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah assisted over 300 BECE Graduates in the constituency to gain admission into the Senior High School in the wake of free Senior High School Education. This measure by the MP was an attempt to settle some issues which came along the introduction of the flagship program- free Senior High School Education.
Currently, she has secured two scholarship for two (2) brilliant Science students to pursue Medicine in Cuba.
To undertake some social interventions in the constituency as a process to improve the plight of the impoverish or the vulnerable so to speak, the incumbent MP carried out a visibility study to assess the state of all communities and rolled out some number of social intervention programs which are intended to provide direct benefits to constituents.
Following this, the MP has embarked to implement a number of social intervention programs in the constituency to alleviate and improve the plight of the very poor. Notable among these social intervention programs is the construction of a 12-seater toilet facilities and a bore hole for community folks of Weija and Gonse.
The member of Parliament, Hon. Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah has been able to lobby through the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Regional Ministry and Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly for the construction of a five (5) kilometer stretch of road. 2.5km of the road will be constructed in Topbase, while the remaining 2.5km stretch of road will also be constructed in Djaman. On 19th if December, 2018, sod was cut to commence the construction of the said roads. The two major roads are set for completion in 24 months period.
In order to make a lot more major and link roads accessible in the constituency, the Member of Parliament commenced a project in the second and third quarter of 2018 to reshaped and resurface major and link roads of the constituency to make them accessible.
It is however, not in doubt that there is a huge deficit of inaccessible roads in the constituency. The huge deficit of accessible roads motivated Hon. Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah to initiate steps to ensure that quite a number of such roads are captured in the national budgets. This when materialized will reduce the road deficits of the constituency.
To retool and also beef up security in the constituency, the MP supplied five (5) motor bikes and sets of computers with accessories, detergents among others to the Weija (SCC) Divisional Police command for onward distribution to the various police stations under the command to enable the police intensify patrols throughout out the constituency.
In 2017, Hon. Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah supplied a set of furniture worth five thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC5,000) to Gbawe Police Station to enable them commence operations. This initiative by the MP led to the opening of the police station for operation. The said police station has since been in operation.
Within a split of two years, the Member of parliament for Weija-Gbawe constituency, Hon. Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah has secured jobs under the current administration of the New Patriotic Party for over four hundred (400) constituents.
She has also provided startup capitals to several men and women to grow their businesses. Over Eighty thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc80,000) has since been made available for this project; which is meant to assist men and women working, but need some money to revamp or inject into the operations of their businesses to yield more profits.
A great part of the money was also made available to assist constituents who needed some money for personal stuffs. These included payment of schools fees, rent advance, settlement of debt, among others.
Poor drainage system is one of the major issues of the constituency, particularly looking at the fact that over 70 percent of communities in the constituency are situated in water lodged. This situation is very dramatic in the event of rainfall which occurs with its related effects of flooding.
To salvage the situation to some extent, between 2017 and 2018, the Member of Parliament, Hon. Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah carried out a number of drainage projects to desilt major drains of filth to allow easy access in the event of rainfall.
The Member of Parliament has procured over 100 Sewing machines and over 100 hairdryers to be used to train the youth to acquire handy skills to be able to make a living. Plans are underway to secure a space for the vocational and technical skills training to commence.
