The heads of three basic schools in Gbawe Circuit in Weija-Gbawe Municipality in the Greater Accra Region are alleged to have extorted some unsubstantiated sum of money from final year students who are starting their BECE come Monday 4, June, 2018.
Information available to us at hardpointonline indicates that some final year students totalling 239 in New Gbawe Cluster of Schools have been asked by their headteachers to pay Ghc20:00 each in an attempt to bribe invigilators in the upcoming BECE as alleged.
According to a parent, name withheld, her daughter who is a final year Student in New Gbawe M/A 2 was asked to pay the Ghc20:00 for the intended purpose mentioned above.
The highly furious woman remarked, ” I demand a refund of the money and call on the education directorate to sanction heads who engage in such extortion, else I will officially file a petition to the Director General of Education for their removal from office as headteachers.
This development prompted hardpointonline to detail a reporter to investigate from students the allegation levelled against the heads.
The students interviewed confirmed and alleged that the head of the school mentioned above and two others who are heads of New Gbawe M/A1 and Mallam M/A 2 Basic Schools also extorted the same amount per student.
In a close up with some students, they also alleged that some unsubstantiated amount was charged from them by the heads of the schools mentioned in the name of mock exams.
Per the FCUBE policy, education continues to be free for all children of school going age; therefore any unsubstantiated or unauthorised amount charged from school children is an affront to the policy.
